LeadConnector WordPress Plugin: GoHighLevel Setup Guide

LeadConnector WordPress plugin sending website leads into the GoHighLevel CRM dashboard

Last updated:

The LeadConnector WordPress plugin is HighLevel’s free official plugin that connects a WordPress site to a GoHighLevel sub-account. Once it is connected, you can show the GHL chat widget, embed forms, surveys, quizzes and calendars, publish funnel steps as WordPress pages, and pull CRM custom values into your content.

Most setup guides stop once the plugin is installed. This one follows the full path a WordPress lead takes into the GHL CRM. It covers the settings that quietly break that path, and how to tell when moving the site to GoHighLevel hosting is the better call.

What the LeadConnector WordPress plugin does

The LeadConnector WordPress plugin links one WordPress site to one GoHighLevel location (sub-account). HighLevel tools such as the chat widget, forms, calendars, funnels and custom values then run inside WordPress, and every lead they capture goes straight into the GHL CRM instead of a separate plugin’s database.

“LeadConnector” is the brand name HighLevel uses on its plugin, mobile app and billing. If the name is new to you, our explainer on what LeadConnector is and how it relates to GoHighLevel covers the background. The plugin listing on WordPress.org describes these core capabilities:

  • Lead capture: chat widgets, forms, surveys, quizzes, calendars, phone number pools and reviews widgets.
  • Funnel publishing: GHL funnel steps imported as WordPress pages.
  • CRM personalization: custom values from the sub-account shown in WordPress content.
  • Email routing: the option to send WordPress email through LeadConnector SMTP.
  • SEO overrides: page metadata for funnel pages published through the plugin.

The plugin is free. The features it connects still depend on an active HighLevel account with a connected location. At the time of writing, the listing requires WordPress 6.2 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer.

LeadConnector plugin vs manual embed codes

You can add GoHighLevel forms and calendars to WordPress without the LeadConnector plugin by pasting embed code into an HTML block. The plugin is the better choice when several people edit the site, because shortcodes and blocks pull assets by ID and are harder to break than pasted script tags.

FactorLeadConnector pluginManual embed code

If you only need one form on one page, manual embedding works fine, and our guide to embedding GoHighLevel forms on any website walks through the options. For a site that uses chat, several forms and booking, the plugin keeps everything in one place.

Connecting WordPress to your GoHighLevel sub-account

Connecting WordPress to GoHighLevel means installing LeadConnector from the WordPress plugin directory, signing in to your HighLevel account from the plugin screen, and choosing the correct sub-account. On sites hosted with HighLevel’s own WordPress hosting, the plugin comes preinstalled and only needs its status checked.

Install and sign in

  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New, search for “LeadConnector”, then install and activate it.
  2. Open the new LeadConnector menu item and sign in with your HighLevel login.
  3. Select the location the site belongs to and confirm the status shows Connected.

The current plugin connects through a sign-in (OAuth) flow. It also supports API-key authentication, which some older installs still use. HighLevel’s official LeadConnector plugin guide explains that if someone regenerates the API key in the CRM, the plugin shows Disconnected until the new key is saved.

Choose the right location

The most common connection mistake is linking the site to the wrong sub-account. Agencies with many clients can easily pick a similarly named location, or the agency’s own demo account. When that happens, leads land in someone else’s CRM, and the workflows tied to the real account never fire.

Before you connect, check which user is signing in. A user with access to several locations sees all of them, so confirm the business name before you save.

Adding the chat widget, forms and calendars to WordPress

The LeadConnector plugin adds GoHighLevel lead-capture tools to WordPress in two ways. The chat widget is switched on site-wide in the plugin settings. Forms, calendars, surveys, quizzes, phone pools and review widgets are placed on individual pages with blocks or shortcodes.

Chat widget

Under LeadConnector > Chat Widget, enable the widget and select which one to show. Build and style the widget in GoHighLevel first, because the plugin only displays what already exists in the sub-account. Messages arrive in the Conversations tab of the CRM, next to SMS, email and social messages.

Forms, calendars and other shortcodes

The plugin registers these shortcodes:

  • [leadconnector_form] for GHL forms
  • [leadconnector_calendar] for booking calendars
  • [leadconnector_survey] and [leadconnector_quiz]
  • [leadconnector_reviews_widget] for the reviews widget
  • [leadconnector_phone_number_pool] for call tracking numbers

Older [lc_*] shortcodes still work, but the plugin’s changelog says they will be removed in a future major release. If your site was built a few years ago, search your pages for [lc_ and plan to replace them.

The plugin does not configure the assets themselves. A form still needs the right fields, and a calendar still needs availability, team members and confirmation settings set up inside GoHighLevel.

Tracking WordPress leads in the GHL CRM

WordPress leads become useful in GoHighLevel only when each submission creates or updates a contact with clean source data. That means the right fields, a consistent source label, and a pipeline stage or tag the team acts on. Unlabeled contacts leave sales guessing.

This is where most installs fall short. The plugin delivers the lead, but its value depends on the CRM side:

  • Field mapping: map phone, email and service interest to standard or custom fields, not a single free-text box. Workflows and segmentation depend on structured data.
  • Source attribution: GHL forms can capture UTM parameters and the page URL. Keep campaign links tagged consistently so the attribution reports in the CRM mean something.
  • Duplicate handling: GoHighLevel matches contacts by email and phone. Get the sub-account’s duplicate settings right before launch, or returning visitors can split into several records.
  • Consent wording: if you plan to text leads, the form needs clear SMS consent language and a business number registered for A2P 10DLC in the US.
  • Speed to lead: a new contact should trigger an immediate notification or follow-up. A lead that sits untouched in the CRM is no better than one that never arrived.

Some WordPress sites also use form plugins such as Gravity Forms, WPForms or Contact Form 7, which LeadConnector does not read. For those, send entries to GoHighLevel through webhooks or Zapier. Our GoHighLevel Zapier integration guide covers the no-code route, and the GoHighLevel API guide explains the developer route.

Publishing GHL funnels and custom values on WordPress

The LeadConnector plugin can publish a GoHighLevel funnel step at a WordPress URL and display CRM custom values inside WordPress content. Funnel pages and site-wide details such as phone numbers then stay under your domain and are edited in one place, inside the sub-account.

Funnel display modes

Under LeadConnector > Funnels, you choose a funnel and a step, then assign a WordPress slug. The plugin documentation describes three display modes:

ModeHow it worksBest for
NativeWordPress fetches the funnel HTML on the server and serves it from your domainLanding pages you want indexed under your WordPress domain
IframeA WordPress page frames content loaded from LeadConnector’s serversQuick embeds when native mode conflicts with the theme
RedirectVisitors are sent to the funnel’s own URLPages where WordPress does not need to be involved

Native mode is the default. If an admin turns it off site-wide, native funnels fall back to iframe mode. Iframe pages give search engines little to index on your domain, so use them with that in mind.

Custom values

Custom values hold details such as the business phone, address or current offer. The [lc_custom_value key="your_key"] shortcode displays a value in WordPress, with the key entered without curly brackets. Change the value once in GoHighLevel and every page using it updates.

LeadConnector plugin vs moving your site to GoHighLevel

Keep WordPress with the LeadConnector plugin when the site carries years of SEO content, relies on plugins with no GHL equivalent, or serves as a large blog. Move the site to GoHighLevel’s website builder when it is mainly a lead-generation site and running two platforms costs more than it returns.

Use these scenarios as a guide:

  • If the site has many ranking blog posts, keep WordPress. Moving content means redirect mapping and a real risk of losing rankings during the move.
  • If the site is a few service pages and a contact form, a GoHighLevel website removes plugin updates, security patches and hosting bills, with forms and calendars built in.
  • If the site depends on WooCommerce, memberships or LMS plugins, keep WordPress and use the plugin for lead capture only.
  • If you want WordPress but managed by HighLevel, HighLevel sells WordPress hosting as an add-on to its plans, with the LeadConnector plugin preinstalled on new sites.
  • If the plugin keeps conflicting with your theme or cache, look at the total time spent on fixes before choosing to keep the stack.

When the answer is to consolidate, plan the move carefully. URL mapping, 301 redirects, form rebuilds and tracking scripts all need to carry over. Our GoHighLevel migration service covers moving websites and CRM data without losing leads in the gap.

Troubleshooting LeadConnector connection problems

Most LeadConnector WordPress plugin problems come from caching, a stale API key, a security plugin blocking outside scripts, or a site connected to the wrong location. Check them in that order before you reinstall, because a reinstall rarely fixes an issue caused by the server or CDN cache.

SymptomLikely causeWhat to check
Chat widget not showingPage cache or JavaScript optimizationPurge plugin, server and CDN caches; exclude LeadConnector scripts from minify and delay settings
Status shows DisconnectedAPI key regenerated or user access removedReconnect with a user who still has access to the location
Forms load blankContent Security Policy or security pluginAllow HighLevel domains in CSP and firewall rules
Leads missing from CRMSite linked to the wrong sub-accountConfirm the connected location name in plugin settings
Custom value appears emptyKey typed with curly brackets or empty valueUse the bare key and confirm the value has data in GHL
Funnel page looks brokenTheme or page builder CSS conflictTry iframe mode for that page, or test with a default theme

Two problems the top guides rarely mention. Optimization plugins that delay all JavaScript until the visitor interacts can stop the chat bubble from appearing at all. And if you route WordPress email through LeadConnector SMTP, the sending domain needs correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, or those notifications land in spam.

Public reviews of the plugin also report that the first connection sometimes needs a retry and a cache clear. If the plugin still fails after the checks above, contact HighLevel support with the plugin version and hosting provider in hand.

WordPress leads falling through the cracks?

When WordPress forms send leads to the wrong sub-account, the chat widget disappears after every cache purge, or nobody can explain where contacts come from, the problem is rarely the plugin alone. It is usually the connection between the site and the CRM setup behind it.

AutogenCRM builds GoHighLevel websites connected to your CRM, forms and calendars, and fixes WordPress-to-GHL lead paths for teams that want to keep WordPress. If the CRM side needs work too, our GoHighLevel setup and onboarding service handles pipelines, fields and notifications, so every captured lead reaches someone who can follow up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the LeadConnector WordPress plugin free?

Yes. The LeadConnector plugin is free to install from the WordPress.org plugin directory. The features it connects to, such as chat widgets, forms, calendars, funnels and CRM contacts, need an active HighLevel account with a connected location. In practice you pay for GoHighLevel, not for the plugin itself.

How do I integrate HighLevel with WordPress?

Install the LeadConnector plugin under Plugins > Add New, activate it, then sign in to your HighLevel account from the LeadConnector menu and select the right sub-account. After that, turn on the chat widget and place forms or calendars with blocks or shortcodes. Leads then flow into the GoHighLevel CRM automatically.

Why is my GoHighLevel chat widget not showing on WordPress?

The usual cause is caching or JavaScript optimization. Purge your caching plugin, server cache and CDN, then hard refresh the browser. If it still fails, exclude LeadConnector scripts from minify, combine and delay-JavaScript settings. Also check that the widget is enabled and selected in the plugin’s chat widget settings.

Does the LeadConnector plugin work with Elementor?

Yes. The plugin includes Elementor-specific compatibility for funnel pages, and its shortcodes work inside Elementor’s shortcode widget for forms, calendars and other assets. Results can still vary by theme and builder setup, so test a published funnel page on mobile and desktop before you send traffic to it.

Can one WordPress site connect to multiple GoHighLevel sub-accounts?

No. The LeadConnector plugin connects one WordPress site to one GoHighLevel location at a time, and the chat widget, forms and custom values all come from that sub-account. If a business runs several brands or locations, use separate sites, or bring the extra leads in through webhooks, Zapier or the API.

Should I use WordPress with the plugin or a GoHighLevel website?

Keep WordPress when the site has a lot of ranking content, ecommerce or plugins GoHighLevel cannot replace. Choose a GoHighLevel website when the site is mainly service pages and lead capture, because it removes plugin maintenance and keeps forms, calendars and the CRM on one platform.
